Consumer Lending Underwriter I

We are looking for a strong Consumer Lending Underwriter to add to the Consumer Lending team. If you have the background and skills required to thrive in this role, we are excited to hear from you.   

  ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Reviews credit report and any issues for score enhancement opportunities. 
  • Finds creative ways to say yes to loan requests wherever possible. 
  • Underwrites loan applications by obtaining credit reports, analyzing the member financial data, verifying member information and request additional information as required. 
  • Makes the decision to grant, counter-offer or decline the credit request. 
  • Responds to telephone inquiries from many sources, such as members, branch managers and other credit union personnel, and auto dealerships. Answer inquiries regarding loan requests, explaining loan procedures, providing technical assistance, answering questions concerning loan rates, terms and related matters. 
  • Works closely with underwriters’ level II & III, processors, loan advisors and frontline partners at all Credit Union branch locations. 
  • Explains loan options, rates, terms and collateral requirements. 
  • Gathers the required information for a credit decision, explains loan options, rates, terms and collateral requirements. 
  • Underwrites loan applications by obtaining credit reports, analyzing the member financial data, verifying member information and request additional information as required. 
  • Enters data in the loan origination and core member systems.  
  • Prepares and mails adverse action letters to the member. 
  • Ability to establish rapport with members, employees, dealerships, and any other partners. Ability to identify members’ needs. 
  • Ability to handle member score enhancement and objectives with minimum assistance. 
  • Maintain a high volume of good quality consumer loans to achieve profitable short-term consumer loans. 
  • Be well organized in processing loan requests. Streamline the workflow to increase production. 
  • Review the final loan documentation to verify that all required documents have been received and are satisfactory to meet the credit union’s underwriting standards.  

  EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree preferred. Knowledge of consumer and home equity lending, products, compliance and regulations. Ability to evaluate strategies, prioritize activities and make effective use of resources. Ability to create an environment which motivates others. Ability to listen effectively, present ideas clearly, concisely and in an organized and interesting manner. Ability to use PC in a windows environment, basic word processing and spreadsheet functions. Ability to think creatively. Basic Business Math and business writing and minimum 30 words per minute typing speed.
